God Save McQueen

God Save McQueen!  Catherine Middleton in the Royal Wedding, one of the most watched and most talked about events of my lifetime, wore British label Alexander McQueen! After months of speculation, rumors, and countless attempts to solve the mystery of who the royal bride would wear, the dress has finally been revealed. Kate looked absolutely stunning in her long-sleeved, ivory lace and satin gown, designed by Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen. “Alexander McQueen’s designs are all about bringing contrasts together to create startling and beautiful clothes,” Burton said in an interview with the Press Association. “I hope that by marrying traditional fabrics and lacework, with a modern structure and design, we have created a beautiful dress for Catherine on her wedding day.” Indeed, they certainly did. She could have worn any dress by any designer in the world, but I think she made the right decision, don’t you? It is estimated that Kate’s McQueen design is worth more than $83,000! I’m sure well worth the price.

Now here are the fabulous details I’m sure you are dying to know:

The fabrics: “French Chantilly lace was combined with English Cluny lace to be hand-worked in the Irish Carrickmacross needlework tradition.” The most delicate and luxurious fabrics with a British touch.

The design: “Individual flowers have been hand-cut from lace and hand-engineered onto ivory silk tulle to create a unique and organic design, which incorporates the rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock.” A design full of tradition combined with modernity.

The jewels: “[The earrings] are diamond-set stylised oak leaves with a pear shaped diamond set drop and a pavé set diamond acorn suspended in the centre.  Inspiration for the design comes from the Middleton family’s new coat of arms, which includes acorns and oak leaves.” Only the best for the future Queen.

The shoes: “The wedding shoes have made hand-made by the team at Alexander McQueen and are made of ivory duchesse satin with lace hand-embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework.” Extravagance down to every small detail.

The veil: “The veil is made of layers of soft, ivory silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers… and held in place by a Cartier ‘halo’ tiara, lent to Miss Middleton by The Queen.” Who doesn’t love Cartier or a tiara?

The hair: The royal bride opted for a natural “demi-chignon,” styled by James Pryce from Kate’s favorite salon, Richard Ward of Chelsea, London. A flawless style no doubt.

Comparisons have been made between Kate and Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco. I can see the similarities, both classic beauties, both with excellent fashion sense. Here is a picture of Grace of her wedding day wearing a similar design. I think it’s safe to say we do indeed have a new Grace Kelly among us. Catherine Middleton did not disappoint, she looked absolutely stunning. Congratulations to happy couple William and Kate!

Daily Obsession for April 26, 2011

Today’s Daily Obsession is Alejandro Ingelmo for Chris Benz’s  floral wedge pumps. Chris Benz is a hot up-and-coming designer who presented his first ready-to-wear designs to the fashion world in the 2007 New York  Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. His designs are colorful with a chic edge, that I simply die for! You can find select items from his collection at websites like Watch out for Chris Benz, his collections are definitely hot hot hot!

Bullet Proof

I love to mix it up with tough girl rocker style combined with girly-feminine fashion. So, while searching for new jewelery pieces, I came across a collection by Bullet Girl and it really caught my attention. I would have to say I’m slightly OBSESSED! The Bullet Girl collection “presents a contradictory juxtaposition of war and peace; wearable and inspirational collectibles born of lethal materials”. They literally take real {blank} bullets and make them into rings, necklaces, and bracelets that are to die for… or even kill for! 🙂 Some of their pieces are even encrusted with diamonds, if you want to get fancy. Bullet Girl definitely makes stand-out statement jewelery. You can see such style icons as Kim Kardashian and Rihanna rocking pieces from their collection. Bullet Girl jewelery is perfect for us ladies that aren’t afraid to take risks.

One for One, One for All

Happy Earth Day everyone! Today is a great day to remind ourselves how important it is to do our part in helping protect and preserve our planet’s precious resources. In honor of Earth Day, I would like to spotlight one of my favorite environmentally friendly designers, TOMS Shoes. If you haven’t heard of TOMS Shoes, you are in for a treat! TOMS not only makes comfy and stylish shoes, they are a company with a mission. I took this excerpt from their website which best describes their movement:

“In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by TOMS customers.”

Not only do they match a pair bought for a pair donated, TOMS also makes a selection of “vegan” shoes, which are completely environmentally friendly and organic. I personally own 4 pairs of TOMS because I love how cute and comfortable they are, and I also love knowing that because I bought them, 4 kids somewhere in the world that were without will get a pair of new shoes just like me. I mean, talk about a win-win situation! The One-for-One movement is about making everyday choices to improve the lives of children throughout the world. We should all take today to consider how we can each do our part to help and implement those thoughts everyday of the year.

Nailed It

I want to share with you my latest obsession… Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips. I’m sure you’ve seen them in an advertisement in your favorite style or gossip magazine. At first I was skeptical yes, I certainly love my weekly mani more than the next girl, and to cheat on my favorite OPI colors, well, that would be just blasphemy! I decided to give it a try though, and it was truly love at first stick. The instructions are so easy, just follow steps 1 through 3. There is no drying time to mess up or smudge, and the most amazing part is, they last for more than a week without a chip!  Which in that time, it’s hard to even keep them because you’re dying to change to the next fun motif. I’ve found that the best selection is at Target, and they frequently have them on sale, which is nice. My favorite one is the cheetah pattern, so I stock up when I find them. I get at least 3 or 4 compliments a day on my nails, and people for the most part, people have no idea they are polish strips because they look professional! I am obsessed with finding patterns I haven’t tried, and I promise you will love them too if you try them. Sally certainly nailed it with this one!

Cheetah pattern, my favorite.

Just a little bit of flare.

You can usually find them in stores in a display like this.

Obsessed Beauty Tip #02

Highlighting and contouring with makeup can drastically change the look and appearance of the shape of your face. Unfortunately, we are not all blessed with perfectly high cheekbones or a petite and slender nose. So luckily, there are several ways to use makeup to accentuate and downplay certain features and even sculpt our faces the way we want to.

Let’s start with contouring. A tip I learned from my favorite MAC artist, is to first find a bronzer and blush that go well with your complexion. NARS sells one I love, conveniently in a duo compact, in the colors ‘Orgasm’ and ‘Aguna’. As long as you have a lighter and  darker shade, just about any two colors will work.  Next, using a large fluffy blush brush, take the bronzer/darker color and shade your cheekbone nearest your hairline in a light circular motion. Then using the blush/lighter color, shade the apples of your cheeks in a light circular motion. Make sure to blend it back a little towards your hairline to mix the colors together. I like to smile big while doing this because is gives me a better idea of where the apples of my cheeks are. If you want to contour a little further, take some of the bronzer/darker color and brush it lightly under your cheeks, along your jaw line and towards your ears. This look will give the illusion of more pronounced cheekbones and a more slender face.

Now let’s talk about highlighting. I love using a highlighter on my face because it gives you a certain fresh glow. A trick to remember when highlighting your features is, imagine someone is holding a flashlight above your head pointing it towards the ground. Now think of every place that light will illuminate, and that is where you put the shine. So, right below your eyebrows, on the top of your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, the top line of your upper lip, and the crease of your chin. When you put a little highlighter along the line above your upper lip, it will make them look larger and more pouty. MAC makes some great highlighters; my favorite is ‘Shimpagne’ in the Mineralize Skinfinish line.

I hope you try this tip and experiment; makeup can be so much fun!

Work It

Just because you are at your 9-to-5, doesn’t mean you should leave your fashion sense at the door. I like to indulge in something called “Little Luxuries”, small things that make you smile and put a little sweetness in your day. Wherever I am, even if it’s at my desk, I like to personalize my surroundings and give them a touch of style. Why? I spend 1/3 of my day at the office, so making it personalized is important. One day as I was shopping for office supplies (which I love to do), I happened to stumble upon these chic little desk accessories. A black stiletto heel tape dispenser and a handbag post-it holder. Fabulous right?! So, everyday when I’m doing spreadsheets and sending e-mails, I have a little bit a luxury to brighten my day.
